THE CURRENT
SNAP Benefits Updates
Earlier this weekend, nearly 2 million Illinois recipients—including local families—received only partial SNAP benefits after the U.S. Supreme Court temporarily blocked full November funding. The Illinois Department of Human Services distributed partial payments on November 7-8, though many reported the amounts were insufficient. Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul continues working to ensure full benefits are provided following the Supreme Court setback. Meanwhile, the Senate advances bipartisan deal to end the 40-day U.S. government shutdown. The agreement restores pay for 800,000 furloughed federal workers, reinstates SNAP benefits, and reverses recent firings of federal employees
High School Volleyball Teams Score Big for Cancer Care
Mattoon and Charleston high school volleyball teams raised $2,800 for the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Foundation's Regional Cancer Center. Diepholz Auto Group contributed an additional $500 to the fundraising effort, demonstrating strong community support for local cancer patients and their families.
25,000 Reward Offered in Construction Site Vandalism
Rep. Reggie Phillips (R-Charleston) announced a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of vandals who damaged a senior-assisted living construction site he owns. Local police currently have no suspects in the case. Phillips also plans to host a town hall meeting to discuss state property tax freeze concerns affecting local residents.
